Pregnant Woman, Unborn Child Shot to Death in West L.A.

There's no word on a motive in the attack.

WEST LOS ANGELES -- Authorities are searching for two men accused in the shooting death of a pregnant woman and her unborn child in the South Robertson area of West Los Angeles.

The shooting was reported around 9:15 a.m. Wednesday in the 1900 block of Corning Street, according police.

Two men got out of a sport utility vehicle, walked up to the woman and shot her as she stood outside an apartment building with two male friends, according Sgt. Gary Levy of the LAPD's West Los Angeles division. As many as four shots were fired at the victim, police say.

The woman, who was 15 to 20 weeks pregnant, was taken to the hospital about three miles away, where she died.

Doctors attempted to save her unborn child, but the baby also died, Levy said.

The woman is said to have been in her 20s.

The suspects were described as two men -- one Hispanic and one African American -- last seen driving a gray Jeep Liberty.

There's no word on a motive in the attack, but police say the shooting may have been gang related.

Insanity at TARGET in West Hollywood

Authorities say Layla Trawick, 34, entered the store and attacked shoppers with a butcher knife and a steak knife. An off-duty L.A. County sheriff's deputy and store security guards apprehended her.

woman wielding two knives went on a rampage Monday at a Target store in West Hollywood, stabbing four shoppers in an apparently random attack that left one victim in critical condition, authorities said.

Detectives from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department are still trying to determine a reason for the attack.

Entertainment journalist Allison McNamara was shopping at the store when she encountered a screaming woman in the aisle that separates the skin care and kitchen sections.

"She was yelling 'I'm bipolar. There's no witness protection program.' "

McNamara said she watched helplessly as the woman plunged a knife into the upper back and shoulder of a male shopper. He had crouched down and covered up to fend off the blows, she said.

"You could see where the knife was going into his back. The knife had ridges and a tag on it. She was going as fast and strong as she could. Four to six inches were covered in blood. She looked like she was going to stab everyone there," McNamara said.

Moments later, the woman looked straight at McNamara, who immediately bolted out of the store with other shoppers and employees. McNamara immediately sent out a Twitter message telling people what she had seen.

Authorities credited Deputy Clay Grant Jr., who was off duty, with preventing additional casualties. Grant was at the Target shopping for paper towels on his day off when he heard screams.

Customers began racing past him toward the exit. "Somebody has a knife," he heard someone in the crowd say.

Out of the cosmetics aisle he saw a young woman wearing a halter top and flowery pants, with a steak knife in one hand and a butcher knife in the other.

Grant, 26, drew his Beretta service weapon and identified himself to the woman as a sheriff's deputy. He demanded she drop the knives. The woman, he said, ran down the aisle, turned and dashed past four other aisles.

"Drop your knife" he ordered again.

She turned, her expression blank and confused, clutching the knives. He said he recalled his training, decided that from her distance of about 20 feet she was no danger to him, and chose not to pull the trigger.

The woman saw his gun and dropped both knives on the floor.

Grant and Target security officials restrained the woman, then handcuffed her.

Hours later, after recounting the incident to his worried mother, Grant said he didn't feel like a hero.

"I just come here to do my duties," the soft-spoken deputy said.

Authorities identified the alleged attacker as Layla Rosetta Trawick, 34, of Antioch, Calif.

Trawick entered the store at La Brea Avenue and Santa Monica Boulevard after noon and picked up two knives, apparently merchandise from the store.

The stabbing set off a stampede of customers, authorities said.

Deputies with the sheriff's West Hollywood station responded after numerous 911 calls reported a gunman at the Target, Sgt. Josh Mankini said. Officials speculate the "gunman" was probably Grant.

"There was a panic in the store," Mankini said.

Officials praised Grant for his quick thinking, saying he might have prevented the situation from getting far worse.

"We are exceptionally proud of Deputy Grant," sheriff's Capt. Michael Parker said. "The reason why this tragic situation wasn't worse was because of the quick thinking of an armed, off-duty sheriff's deputy who was willing to risk his life to end this situation."

Four people were wounded, including a woman who was carrying a baby. The baby was unhurt. The most seriously injured victim was taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in critical condition, officials said. He was showing signs of improvement late Monday.

L.A. County Sheriff's Department spokesman Steve Whitmore said Trawick is being held at the West Hollywood Sheriff's Station jail on $1-million bond. Store security cameras captured the attack, but the footage is not being released.

The Connection Between the OLD & the YOUTH

There should be a CONNECTiON between adults & youth . Why ? because the POWER resides in the YOUTH (us). God loves using young people . Example ( David & Solomn were very young , but GOD used them )

Read the STORY of David & Goliath . 1 Samuel 17:32

Youth , we believe , we have FAiTH . The OLD need to have faith like a child . Its simple , believe what dad says . We can get work done together . We can do better together .

Remember the word as a young person . LEARN by other's (the OLD) experiences . Try not to go thru certain experiences yourself . Avoid things that cause sorrow . When you are SiNGLE you have it easier . Because the OLDER you get the more COMPLEX it becomes . Life is like a HOUSE , you have to make repairs when its needed or itll become a disaster .

AS a mature CHRiSTiAN ( the old ) :

- Be encouraging and seek faith for the YOUTH
- Every person really wants to be around people that want to be around them
- Its your JOB to give the YOUTH hope

WE ALL BENEFIT

The CONNECTiON :

- With wisdom and youth its POWERFUL
- We feel ENCOURAGED , INSPiRED , and driven to DETERMiNiTiON
- THE YOUTH can borrow wisdom & Inspiration to share w/ others

As you get older you become so INDEPENDENT , you loose FAiTH . you need DEPENDANCE to fall on .. turn to the YOUTH . The Wisdom (the OLD) should be CHARGED , charged by the YOUTH .

WALK in the ways of your HEART .

& remember ,

WiSDOM ( The OLD )
+
YOUTH ( My GENERATION )

Yoga and Weight Loss By Margaret Furtado, M.S., R.D.

Yoga... it means union of mind and body, and you probably know what sets it apart from stretching or calisthenics: the deep and distinct connection with your breath.

Did you know, though, that even gentle yoga can help with weight loss? Scientists at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center showed that regular yoga practice helped:

-prevent middle-age spread in people of healthy weight

-promote weight loss in those who were overweight

Along with colleagues, Dr. Alan Kristal, a professor of epidemiology at the Hutchinson Cancer Center, developed a study that looked at yoga's effect on people's eating habits (and therefore on their weight). The researchers first developed a questionnaire or feedback form, which determined how mindful and focused each participant was while eating. By filling out the questionnaire, participants could see when they were eating while distracted, eating despite already being full, or using food to mask emotional distress.

All the participants were physically active, following regimens that included walking for at least 90 minutes per week, and one group regularly practiced yoga.

Simply put, what the scientists found was that a consistent yoga practice was strongly associated with mindful eating. In fact, the study found that yoga--regardless of whether it was practiced vigorously or not--was the only physical activity consistently associated with attentive eating.

So what's so great about mindful eating, you ask? The researchers explained that the people who ate mindfully were aware of why they were eating and were thus more apt to stop eating when they were full; that is, focused eaters tended to eat because they were hungry and not because they were trying to mask anxiety or depression. The yoga participants also weighed less, had lower body mass indexes, and were less likely to be obese than were the subjects who were not as mindful while eating. (In fact, the lower a participant's BMI was, the higher was his or her awareness rating on the questionnaire.)

I've mentioned in the past that if you're eating mindfully, chances are you're eating more slowly. And if you're eating slowly and paying attention to what you're doing, you're going to be more apt to notice when you're feeling full--your brain gets the stomach's signal of fullness more promptly when you're paying attention.

This study is one more vote for including yoga in weight-loss programs, over and above its ability to reduce stress and lower blood pressure.

Here are a couple of resources I recommend to clients who ask me how they can get started with the practice of yoga:

* To find a yoga class. Go to YogaFinder.com to find teachers in most nations of the world. The United States is listed as "USA," in the last column to the right.

* To find yoga poses with specific therapeutic benefits. Go to the Yoga Journal Web site and run your cursor over the "Poses" heading at the top. In the drop-down menu that appears, click on "Therapeutic Focus." There you'll find a list of about 20 ailments or symptoms; click to see illustrated poses that might help alleviate them. (Note: Please also pay attention to any "Contraindications," which are also listed for each pose.)

* Yoga DVDs for beginners. A DVD series with the unfortunate title of "Yoga for Dummies" happens to be a great teaching device. It shows plenty of modifications and alternative poses. Another good one for beginners is "AM/PM Yoga" from Gaiam, with Patricia Walden and Rodney Yee. For a sample of moves, try these Everyday Yoga with Rodney Yee videos on Y! Health.
